Credits and you: why you should always credit what you use on the internet

The other day I came upon a post someone made years ago here on DW. The post was about how to create tables to use for RP or whatever as comments, posts or profiles. Sounds fair right? But the user also said something along these lines:
No one should ever ask for credit for a table because it's a basic code that's been around since the beginning of time

Ok, I'll give you the exact link to the post. You can read it here. In all honesty, I feel annoyed by that user's view on what should be credited and what shouldn't.

"Now you never have to credit someone for a stupid table code ever again!", the user claims. I would understand not crediting someone for the bold, italic, cut tags. That's something that exists and it's a no brainer: you get the tags and how to use them and that's it.
But a table, even if simple, it takes time to build up, it needs some thought put into it. Some are amazing tables with lots of effects and colours. Tables exist since forever, but what I'm talking about is the time to think, put together a table, share it, or even code up a program that makes this process automatic!! Why wouldn't you credit THAT??

Some people tend to think that because it's something simple, theoretically, it shouldn't be credited. Take icons as example. Some authors even leave crediting optional. Well, you know what. You shouldn't. You have the right to be credited for what you made, uploaded and shared. Believe it or not, your time and creativity deserve some credit!

What about the infamous table coding? Why was that user so annoyed by people asking for a little credit or link back? What you credit is NOT the table coding in itself, it's not something someone came up with. You credit the time put into it as an artistic mean or as a resource.

Where does that take us? Well, all I'm saying is that be it a layout, an icon, a miserable table. Anything you take, like and use, should be credited. I can guarantee you that if you made these, you would love to be linked back. My main focus here on DW is making layouts @ [community profile] inconformista. These layouts take a lot of time and effort to be made and all I ask for in return is a link back to the community in case someone would want to use the layout too. That's it!
For icons, people take time from their daily life to create something beautiful to pretty up our journals, it's only natural that we credit the makers!

So, next time you take and use something made by someone else, do credit them. Even if they say it's optional, do it. Show some love, leave them a comment. Heck, leave comments even if you don't take anything. If you like something, show the creators because that's the best thing about sharing graphics and artworks online.
And to the people who think it's stupid giving credit for a simple piece of code: it's ok if you don't give a damn. But some people take time from their lives to share even the simplest of things. Someone may want to find the creator! A link back won't hurt. But if you wish to learn to do stuff yourself so you don't have to credit anyone, then do us a favour and go ahead.

The thing with me is that..

I will always credit: if I use it-- I will credit. That's a no brainer for me, but as for my work, if I see it in use that's awesome. Though if they claimed that 'they' made it, that's when I will poke them with a spork until either one of us dies (protip: it won't be me). But I can totally understand and laud people who ask for credit because it is their work, they spent time on it, and so yeah-- it's deserved.

I may deserve it, but I don't really expect any sort of credit on a icon info page. I get far more fun out of comments which I can respond to, which I can forge friendships over-- the greatest people I've met as commented on my stuff and squee'd with me over shared fandoms/characters/pairings. I don't really give a fig about someone crediting me on their user icon page, what I do crave is personal interactions.

I don't know why people do that tbh.

And there were also people who posted icons with the disclaimer "These are not bases"-- because they had no text; and everyone stole those, despite the disclaimer-- even though lighting is JUST as important as text, a good lighting can create the entire mood of the icon so I can fully understand about the textless icons not being bases.

But some people, tho....
